We help our partners increase their capacity to achieve their mission by matching them with diverse, talented individuals from the community. Here is how we’ve helped some of our partners.
DC Prep was seeking to expand their reach into the student body, as well as helping teachers pull books to support their curricula. To achieve this, Laura Kravis of DC Prep decided to partner with Public Allies Washington, D.C. 
(PADC). According to Laura, “We knew this would be a group of people that are comfortable with the various groups in the communities we serve. Public Allies finds people from the DC community who’ve had various initial paths after high school and are trying to do something different with their lives. They’re people who are driven and really want to do something positive in their communities and in their own lives. Public Allies is an opportunity to bring creative people into the school community that are a part of the DC community, and who want to fine-tune and professionalize their skills. “
Laura also shared the value that her Ally brought to DC Prep. “Public Allies have been essential in building the capacity of the library… Our Ally has been full of ideas about how to keep kids interested in reading. She (created) a million small activities in the library to engage kids in new genres. . . ” Laura continued, “She’s also done some digging into our database and found a whole new catalog site that’s kid-friendly and is going to revolutionize how our teachers and students can use our library.”
The Abramson Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is a new partner for the 2019-2020 program year. According to ASF’s Executive Director, Danielle Verbiest, “ASF is a small but growing organization with currently only 1 FTE (and a cadre of 60 amazing volunteer mentors). As we are looking to expand programming, we know we need to add staff capacity. Through one of our peer organizations, we were reminded of Public Allies and the capacity building support they offer.” Danielle further stated, “For a youth- serving organization like ASF, Public Allies offers the perfect solution of ensuring that we can expand staff capacity in a responsible way while offering the opportunity to a civically engaged youth (who can relate to our Scholars) to develop leadership skills and gain experience working in the nonprofit sector.
Discussing ASF’s Ally, Breia Lassiter, and the benefits she has already brought to the organization, Danielle shared, “Our Ally brings a fresh set of eyes, enthusiasm for our and mission and critical capacity to our organization as we are building out our mentoring program.”
