This is What Long-term Change Looks Like

Change doesn’t always show up with fanfare. It’s not always bold or loud. Sometimes, it looks like a young person stepping into their first role in a nonprofit. Or a new parent gaining confidence and finding their voice. Or an alum coming back to mentor the next cohort of leaders.

This is what long-term change looks like.

At Public Allies, we don’t chase quick wins. We invest in people who have been overlooked, underestimated, and under-resourced. We believe that leadership lives in every community, and we create pathways for those closest to the problems to lead the solutions.

Every year, hundreds of Public Allies step into 10-month apprenticeships at local nonprofits. They’re not just getting job experience, they’re making real impact in their neighborhoods. They’re learning how to organize, how to listen, how to build trust, and how to make systems work for people, not against them.

These Allies go on to become educators, public health leaders, policy makers, and nonprofit directors. But they also become connectors, bridge-builders, and lifelong advocates for equity.

It’s not glamorous work. And it’s not easy. But it is urgent. And it is necessary.

In a time when federal funding is under threat, this kind of deep, community-rooted leadership development is at risk. That’s why we’re raising our voices — to protect what works. To fight for what matters.

Because this is what long-term change looks like. And it needs all of us to keep it going.

Public Allies is dedicated to disrupting systems that impact communities, while listening, learning, and working together across differences to build the common good. Join us.
