HOW WILL YOUR ORGANIZATION CHANGE?
We help our partners increase their capacity to achieve their mission by matching them with diverse, talented individuals from the community. Here is how we’ve helped some of our partners.
The Opa-locka Community Development Corporation (Opa-locka) is a nonprofit community development corporation whose primary mission is to create and stimulate economic development and affordable housing, improving the quality of life for residents in the City of Opa-locka and other neighboring communities of North Miami-Dade.
Megan Bennet (Class of 2018-2019) built capacity for the Tech Hire program by helping get the program off the ground. The Tech Hire center has a space and computers, and we got funding to offer programming in the form of classes in data management, web design, cyber security, etc. to young adults ages 16-25. Megan built the capacity to operate this center, and she also helped with the organization wide database.
In reflecting on Megan’s work, Karla Gottlieb, Opa-Locka’s Director of Partnership Engagement, shared “We love this program. We have had Allies for the past 8 years and we have offered 5 of them jobs.”
From year-round education programs for children and families, to the creation of community spaces to the integration of community policing, and paid internships for the youth in the neighborhood, Miami Children Initiative’s (MCI) work has resulted in serious engagement and community ownership of their brilliance and academic experience. MCI’s ability to build trust in the community by fully integrating itself into all aspects of life in Liberty City has helped MCI and its program partners create a continuum of solutions for Liberty City’s children and families.
Elijah Muhammad (Class of 2018-19) helped create a system to assist new parents and students adjust to the program by linking them to their Student Advocates, Certified Teachers and Site Coordinator. He helped create a virtual system for volunteers so the organization can track the volunteers paperwork, feedback and linkage to appropriate programming.
