To illustrate this, we reached out to some of our amazing alumni and asked them to reflect on how Public Allies helped them change their beliefs, thoughts, actions, and more. Katy Kujala-Korpela, Class of 2008-2009

Volunteer Leader, iCAN

I used to be uncomfortable with confrontation, but now I am better equipped to have important, uncomfortable conversations regarding sexism, race and other issues in our society.

I used to be a self criticizer and degrade my own thoughts and abilities, now I believe I am capable of doing anything I put my mind to and is comfortable in any space I enter.

I used to be very ignorant of my environment, people, and myself, but now I am facing and embracing diversity, struggles, and self-care. Community is what builds us in the end and it’s up to us to stay active and productive members in those communities.

I used to focus exclusively on serving those with shared experiences and identities as me, but now I know that real work and progress can only be done if it is intersectional.

I use to be overwhelmed by knowing that the first step to helping my community was by holding myself accountable to be a decent human being, but now I have stepped out of my comfort zone and accepted my responsibilities. And now I give back on a daily by just working on myself to become a better me.

I used to think taking time to reflect and receive feedback took away from the work and was unnecessary, but now I understand that is a critical part of any process to learn, grow, and affect change.

I used to be disconnected from my community, looking in from the outside. Now I have made my career in public service and that directly ties back to my time in Public Allies.

I used to be uneducated about the oppressive structures in society, but now I am aware and better able to navigate the world in a way that is justice seeking and freeing.
