There is so much to celebrate during Women’s History Month, but we must be careful to ensure that celebration includes ALL women…and recognizes there is more work to be done for justice and equity. With help from Ms. Magazine, we can consider how to commemorate this important time in an intersectional way:
What is intersectionality?
A term coined by theorist Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, “intersectionality” connects multiple identities, including gender identity, race, class, disability, age, sexual orientation, and more.
Which women?
An intersectional Women’s History Month embraces and celebrating all women. Importantly, this includes those who have been historically excluded, like women of color and trans women.
Looking back or forward?
Celebration is important, but there is still much work to be done for gender equality in America. Until the wage gap, sexual harassment, and general discrimination are overcome, the history books are still being written.
Just a month?
Every month should be Women’s History Month. Gender equality requires daily work and conversation, not just a handful of weeks.
